Scale Model Making

Before starting the model, always read the instructions fully. These allow you to work out where and when details such as interior and pilots should be painted.

Only cut the pieces from the sprue as and when you need them. Prior to application of glue always fit the pieces together in a 'dry run'.

Painting the pilot is best done while he is still on the sprue.

If you have painted some parts before gluing (for example pilots, cockpits, engines and interiors) always scrape off paint from surfaces to be glued to ensure a good bond.

When painting the exterior always apply paint sparingly to avoid obscuring important details. With experience you may find a drop of thinners in a well stirred paint will help it to flow more easily.

Cut the decal out very carefully, keeping as near to the edge of the design as is possible, and place in warm water for 45 seconds.

Slide the decal off its backing sheet and into position on the model. Use a paintbrush to reposition as this reduces the chance of causing damaging to the decal.

Once in position, gently dab the decal with a piece of tissue paper to absorb excess moisture.

Gluing is probably the most important part of model making. Even if your model is well painted, it can be permanently marred by bad gluing.

Never put too much glue on pieces as this causes bubbles of cement to be squeezed out from the adjoining surfaces. This is likely to damage the finish of the model.

Pieces can be held together with masking tape whilst drying.

Should you decide to sand down a join - for example on a ship's hull - use only the finest wet and dry paper and sand down a little at a time.
